 FAQs

  • Adopting a parrot rather than purchasing from a breeder is a compassionate choice that can make a significant difference. Many parrots in rescues are there through no fault of their own—often due to changes in their owner’s circumstances, lack of understanding about their care, or simply because they outlived their previous owners. By adopting, you’re giving a parrot a second chance at a loving home and helping to alleviate the growing problem of unwanted birds in rescues.

Additionally, adopting allows you to better understand the parrot’s personality and behaviour, as rescue staff can provide insights into the bird’s temperament and needs. Parrots from rescues are often fully vetted, and many have been rehabilitated, making them wonderful companions. Adoption also avoids supporting the breeding industry, which can sometimes involve unethical practices and overbreeding. Choosing to adopt is not only rewarding but also an opportunity to give a bird in need a brighter future.

If you feel you need to go to a breeder for your own reasons, then please do your research. Ensure you speak with a breeder that you can meet, and ideally meet the bird and parents too. Never ever pay money online without seeing a bird, and avoid making purchases on Facebook. No one will ever sell an egg, if they claim to be selling eggs it is a SCAM.

  • Yes, any parrot you choose to adopt has been tested for the main and most dangerous diseases.

  • It’s a common misconception that only baby parrots can be molded to fit a person’s needs, but the truth is, parrots of all ages can be trained and form strong bonds with their owners. While baby parrots may initially seem easier to train due to their early stage of learning, adult and even older parrots are just as capable of learning new behaviours and adapting to new environments.

Adopting an older parrot can be incredibly rewarding—they often come with established personalities, and many are already familiar with basic training and social skills, and they're usually weaned, something only very experienced avian experts should ever participate in. While some older parrots may require more patience and time to build trust, their ability to learn is not diminished by age. With positive reinforcement, patience, and consistent interaction, parrots of any age can become loving and well-behaved companions, tailored to your lifestyle. The key is to meet them where they are and nurture the bond through respect, understanding, and positive experiences.

  • You can head to any of our recommended rescue centres, and begin the adoption process. All homes and people will be vetted to ensure the bird you are interested in will fit your circumstances. There is an adoption fee when adopting a parrot which covers the disease testing and rehabilitation your bird has undergone prior to adoption.
